CACTICAN

Project Brief

2022 - 1st Year

Skills: Solidworks, Form, Modelling

Cactican is a high end watering can, designed specifically for cacti and succulents. The detachable handle is connected to a built-in submersible dipping platform, allowing the cactus pot to be dipped into the water. It is thoughtfully designed to blend functionality with aesthetic elegance. Designed in Solidworks, rendered in Keyshot.

Challenge

Create a high end watering can specifically designed for one kind of plant. It must be a standalone sculptural piece that should look beautiful in someone's home. Find a plant with unique watering needs, where form follows function.

Opportunity

Create a design that encourages users to take care of a particular plant by creating a mechanism that makes watering their cacti and succulents easier, and mess free. Encourage use and attraction to the product by creating a beautiful form that subtly stands out in the home.

Features

Dunk

Many desert plants are best watered in a method similar to flooding, where the plant soil is dunked in water. This is why Cactican comes with a detachable handle with submersible dipping platform that can hold plant pots up to 12” in diameter

Submerging small plant pot in watering can with handle, to achieve an easy dunking experience.

Pour

For larger plants, Cactican can pour steady amounts of water with its gooseneck spout. The elongated spout allows you to avoid wetting plant leaves, ensuring that even the most sensitive of plants remain healthy.

Process

Flooding Methods

Devising a way to submerge the plant pot and lift it out for proper drainage. This process aligns with the best way of watering desert plants, which requires creating a flash flood.

Handle & Form

Better Volume Distribution

Exploring the geometry of a shorter, wider watering that better suits the need of desert plants.

Concept 1 - Angular, rough
Concept 2 - Bulbous, accent lines
Concept 3 - simple, long

Continuous Curve

This led to the final shape of the watering can. An accent line was created across the watering can that directs the eye to the "innovation" or Cactican's handle.
